Our History


Metropolitan United Methodist Church, then known as Methodist Episcopal Church from 1883-1886, was an outgrowth of prayer meetings at several homes of people who were inspired by God and dedicated to establishing a place of worship.  These devoted Christians succeeded in purchasing land and erecting a meeting place.

The first church was built in 1902 and named Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church.  When the United Methodist Church was formed in 1968, we joined and our name was changed to Metropolitan United Methodist Church. 


Metropolitan United Methodist Church is part of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, a conference made up of almost 200,000 members in over 650 United Methodist churches in Maryland, Washington, D.C., the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and Bermuda.  

Who We Are


The United Methodist faith is deeply rooted in the Scripture and in the basic beliefs of all Christians.  Methodism was founded in America in Baltimore in 1784. As the birthplace of the denominations (AME, CME, AME Zion), this region has been a leader within the denomination, known for its unique mixture of spiritual devotion and social action. 

John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action.  This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.

Out of that theology and the faith we share, have grown some specific actions that mark United Methodists as Christians engaged in ministry to the world.  The early members of the groups that eventually became The United Methodist Church.

- took strong stands on issues such as slavery, smuggling, and human treatment of prisoners;
- established institutions for higher learning;
- started hospitals and shelters for children and the elderly;
- founded Goodwill Industries in 1902.

What We Believe

 

We, as United Methodists, profess the historic Christian faith in God, incarnate in Jesus Christ for our salvation and ever at work in human history of the Holy Spirit.  Living in a covenant of grace under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we participate in the first fruits of God’s coming reign and pray in hope for its full realization on earth as in heaven.  We welcome people of all ages, races, and backgrounds as we seek to minister in the name of Jesus Christ.

We believe:

 

- the Bible is the infallible Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and provides every answer to every problem man will experience.   2 Peter 1:20-21

 

- in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.   John 14:26

 

- Jesus Christ died on the cross and shed His blood for our sins.   Romans 5:8-11

 

- Jesus rose from the dead and is coming again. Mark 16:9-14; Acts 1:9-11

 

- God is love and He loves us all.    God wants us to reach out to the poor, oppressed, widowed or orphaned, and to heal the brokenhearted.   Psalm 68:5; 1 John 4:7-11

 

- We should live like Christians.   Romans 12:9-21
